Some good insights into the iPad debate from Marco’s blog. I give iPad more credit than Marco though, it has been a productivity tool for me. It unchains me from my desk, and that is central to my productivity. I do use it for things like email and document processing (not for coding, not yet). It isn’t as easy to use for those things, but if you think that makes it unuseable, you are missing the point.
The iPad is a disruptive technology to the laptop and desktop computer. It is inferior in the things that you think of as their key characteristics, most of the things in Marco’s list, but it is superior in “side” characteristics - such as portability and convenience. It will build up steam in this side market, and eventually gain ground in the primary characteristics mentioned, eventually surpassing in those categories as well. The only catch, of course, is that it isn’t this version. It will be iPad 4.0 or 5.0 or most likely something similar but with Android (and it has to have a web cam!). But it is a nice start, enough for me to get away from the desk and into the world more.
Rationalizing the purchase of an iPad usually includes a few of these:
- I’ll carry it around most of the time.
- I’ll be able to replace my laptop with it.
- I’ll be able to replace my Kindle with it.
- I’ll bring it on trips instead of my laptop.
- I’ll respond to email with it.
- I’ll get work done…

Great post, Marco. It sums up my feelings as well, but what kind of impact do you feel multi-tasking will have on your use and items listed in your post?
